No matter where you go or what you will be doing once you get there, going on vacation with kids takes planning and prep. I am definitely a planner when it comes to travelling with my boys. Makings lists weeks ahead to make sure I don’t forget anything. Our first trip overseas was when our first son was 10 months old…I may have over packed a little, but it was a huge learning and bit by bit, and trip after trip I have learned a few strategies when it comes to traveling with my kids. I’ve also learned some things along the way when it comes to eating well while away from home. More on that later…
Our latest trip to Mexico was amazing!! We went to meet my parents who had been on holiday there for nearly a month. Everything was perfect…the beach, the water, the pool, the people, and of course the food. For a trip like this, the boys didn’t need a lot of “extras” as they literally only got out of the ocean to eat and sleep. The added bonus of having my parents there to help and spend time with us, made the trip even better. Although vacationing with kids is fun, it is not very relaxing. As a mom, my brain is constantly thinking about the next meal, sunscreen, hats, snacks, bedtime, and safety (my boys loved to run into the ocean, and keep running until they could no longer touch, or a wave took them). After awhile they got wise to the waves…lol. My husband and I would have to take turns standing in the water with them, while the other got a “break” on the lounge chair. And even though in theory this sounds like a good thing, I would feel guilty if I sat for too long and would end up in the water again to watch the boys. So although we had a great time, vacationing with kids is just different. It took me awhile to come to terms with this, and there are still days where I would get frustrated of being the one to plan when the boys would eat, sleep, sunscreen, nap, and so on. I have a great husband who is an equal partner and parent to our boys, but as the mom I am the “point” person, the one who makes the decisions. Sometimes I get tired of making most of the decisions, sometimes I want someone else to say “ok this is what the boys will eat for dinner”, or “when did they get sunscreen last, we need to reapply”. If you are a mom, you will know what I mean. The point is that before trips like this, I try to get my mindset right. I LOVE vacationing with my kids and with my parents, the memories we make are worth so much more then the minor frustrations.
So what does this have to do with nutrition? lol. Well there was a time when I would get anxious about what I would be eating on vacation. I would worry about staying “on track” and the possiblity of destroying all my hard work in a single week of not working out or eating perfect. Over time, I have learned some useful strategies of not only how to eat well while on vacation, but how to stay on track while on the go in my everyday life as a mom. Learning these was a game changer for me, lessend my anxiety around food and not being in my routine and helped me stay on track while away. What I know for sure is that when I’m out of my routine, I don’t expect to be perfect anymore. I do the best I can with what I have, and stop worrying about the rest. Life is just too short to worry about the small stuff.
With my trip to Mexico, I did what I was comfortable with as far as eating. I packed some protein powder, protein bars, and made better choices when it came to eating out for lunch and dinner. That said, I also made the decision to do the best I could, and drink the margarita (or a few) without feeling guilty. I don’t need to strive for perfection or fret about food because I have the tools I need to eat healthy when I can and when I choose too.
